PARENTING OUR PARENTS:  What Children and Their Parents Need to Know to Help Seniors Receive the Care They Deserve in Their Golden Years

In many ways, this course will be an introduction to Elder Law, covering different topics over four weeks.  This program is presented by Macrina G. Hjerpe, JD, LL.M, and by Christopher Browning, JD, William Grossman, CLTC and several experts on specific topics to be covered.  Four 2-hour sessions.

INTRODUCTION TO MICROSOFT EXCEL

This course is an intensive introduction to Excel for people who want to be able to use a spreadsheet program effectively, starting with the basics and moving on to more advanced topics.  We will cover the use of arithmetic calculations, and procedures for business applications, including budgets, cost estimating, forecasting, and analysis.  Participants can expect to take away with them spreadsheets that they have designed which may be put to work immediately in their office or home.  Four 2-hour sessions.

INTRODUCTION TO PERSONAL COMPUTERS

This course is designed to build confidence and skills for any beginner or new user of a personal computer.  Many people are given a computer and never shown the basics, which you will learn in this hands-on class. Special emphasis is given to fundamental computer skills while building confidence and having fun.  The course also has a basic introduction to Microsoft Office. The instructor is the Director of IT at the Wyatt Detention Center and is a Microsoft certified professional with over 20 years of experience. He also does technical spots for WJAR. Seven 2-hour sessions.

MICROSOFT WORD FOR BEGINNERS AND INTERMEDIATES

This hands-on course is designed to introduce you to Microsoft Word.  During the class, you will be learning how to create, edit and modify documents, in addition to learning how to use the “Wizard” features to create a resume, as well as how to use the “Help” features.  The course will also explore the word-processing techniques in the Microsoft package using the “Mail Merge” feature.    We will discuss the computer in both  the business and home environments in relation to this software package.  This course will also incorporate the particular needs of students as requested in the classroom. Five 2 1/2-hour sessions.

COOKIES FOR CHRISTMAS! (FOR ADULTS OR FOR PARENT/CHILD TEAMS)

Come and join the fun as we bake and swap a variety of scrumptious, beautiful cookies for the holidays.  Learn the tried and true secrets involved in the baking of all different types of cookies and how to manage a baking schedule that supports the baking of all these treats in time for the holidays.  Everyone will participate in the baking of the cookies, and there will be a cookie swap at the end of the evening!! So, bring your aprons and your Tupperware and get ready to bake up a storm!  Copies of recipes will be provided, as well as all ingredients needed to create the cookies.

Join Chef Katie in exploring fabulous fall and holiday cuisine!  Katie has a broad knowledge of food…growing up in New England, studying and living in South Carolina, and attending Apicius Culinary Institute in Florence, Italy.  Katie also owns her own catering company, “Easy Entertaining”.  Her experience brings a fresh look at foods with which we are familiar, plus the opportunity to expand our food knowledge!  Please join us for the following classes, in which Chef Katie will share her expertise and celebrate with food, family and friends!

 

LA VIGILIA DI NATALE:  An Italian Christmas Eve

Here in America, we put most of our holiday emphasis on Christmas Day.  But in Southern Italy, it’s all about Christmas EVE!  We will learn all about the “Night of the Seven Fishes”, including a review of traditional dishes served and the meaning behind them.  Join us to learn how to bring this rich tradition to your Christmas Eve table.  One 2-hour session.

MEDITERRANEAN MAKEOVER

Have you heard about the new diet pyramid modeled after the Mediterranean diet?  It’s all the rage, incorporating lots of fresh fish and whole grains.  This class will teach you how to incorporate these ingredients into your everyday diet.  We will learn about the benefits of olive oil, how to fit fish in three times a week and how to really enjoy your whole grains.   One 2-hour session.

BOXWOOD TREE for CHRISTMAS

Create a lovely decoration using fresh boxwood in our 1½ hour workshop.  Participants will make a 15-18” boxwood Christmas tree, perfect for your holiday buffet table or to give as a gift.  These lovely, decorated trees are great for the apartment-dweller with no room for a large tree!  Students should bring newspaper and clippers with which to work.  One 1 ½ hour session.  This course is limited to 15 participants, and is co-sponsored by the Barrington Garden Club.

THE ARTISTIC HERITAGE of ANCIENT ASSYRIA

This three-session seminar focuses on the ancient history and artistic treasures of countries which, while seemingly on the nightly news on a daily basis, most of us have never visited. In this introductory class,  we’ll learn about the Assyrians, who, from the ninth to the seventh centuries BC,  emerged as the dominant power in the Near East, controlling all of present-day Iraq, Syria, Jordan, Lebanon, Israel, and Egypt, as well as large parts of Turkey and Iran. This short course serves as an orientation for the special exhibition, “Art and Empire: Treasures from Assyria in the British Museum” this fall at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Two 2-hour classes plus field trip to Museum of Fine Arts, Boston for the special exhibition, “Art and Empire.”  (see page 12 for details).

FEE: $80. Includes course tuition and trip fee. Preference will be given to those registering for both the lecture and the field trip.

Also available AFTER October 15, course only @ $35.

ICONS of 20TH CENTURY ART: VAN GOGH and MIRÓ

This 4-session course will introduce certain aspects of the works produced by two of the 20th century’s greatest artists, Vincent van Gogh and Joan Miró, painters whose works reflecting specific procedures and periods are the subjects of two exhibitions this fall at the Museum of Modern Art. Three 2-hour class sessions plus field trip.

FEE: $120 for Course/Trip combination.
