EMILY DICKINSON: EMOTIONAL MESS or CREATIVE GENIUS? All school conceptions, i.e. traditional views, of Emily Dickinson are misleading, if not dead wrong. She was NOT the virginal poet as we have been led to believe; contrary to that, she fell in love consistently with much passion and her poetry reflects that. Her poetry has always been elusive, but by the end of this course, you will know exactly what she was saying and what was in her heart. This four-session exploration of the life and works of the Belle of Amherst will be a discussion course; therefore, your ideas will be as incisive as anybody else’s, since Dickinson will not be attending the class!Three classroom sessions and a field trip to Amherst will make up the structure of this course, to be conducted by Dr. Richard Tyre, who will lead this exploration into the life of one of this country’s most popular poets. The field trip will consist of a guided tour of the Dickinson Homestead and The Evergreens, lunch in Amherst, and a visit to the Dickinson family grave, after which Dr. Richard Tyre will continue his exploration of Dickinson’s life and her poetry; material will also be offered en route to Amherst by Dr. Tyre, who lectures frequently on Emily Dickinson, as well as Robert Frost, about whose poetry he has written two books. For further details on the field trip, please refer to the description in the “On the Road with BCS” section of this brochure. FEE: $95. (Includes course tuition and field trip to Amherst with admissions, tours, additional lecture by Dr. Tyre en route, lunch, BCS Escort, motorcoach transportation and driver tip.) INTRODUCTION TO SYMPHONIC LISTENING In this 7-week course, students will develop listening skills to enhance their enjoyment of classical music. These skills will be developed as we explore the building blocks of music: melody, rhythm, texture, and form, as well as the families of instruments in the orchestra. These elements will be addressed as we listen to the Classical Period symphonies of Haydn and Mozart, and continue with symphonies by Beethoven, Schubert, and Tchaikovsky from the Romantic Period. The course will consist of 5 classroom sessions, supplemented by two field trips to Symphony Hall in Boston for two morning rehearsals which will feature pieces included in the course. Transportation and tickets are included in the course tuition. Our instructor, Sheryl Cohen, performs and presents master classes worldwide, most recently in Sweden, France and Ecuador. Cohen’s musical expertise extends from early music performance practices to techniques and repertoire of the present day. Her book, “Bel Canto Flute: The Rampal School “, was winner of the 2004 National Flute Association’s Newly Published Music Award and has been reviewed as “one of the most well-thought-out and creatively written pedagogical works of the past half-century…”. She has also taught Music at the University of Alabama. T.S. ELIOT – 1888-1965 Many would consider T.S. Eliot the most influential poet of the 20th century. He is also, today, one of the most controversial. Did he influence poetry for the modern era, or did he set it back with his scholarly finickiness? We will discuss perhaps the most discussed poem of the 20th century, The Wasteland (1922), which established him as the voice of a disillusioned generation. We will also look at The Journey of the Magi, The Hollow Men and the powerful play, “The Cocktail Party.” We will start with the famous motion picture, “Tom and Viv” to get an idea of his unique personality, and we will try to decide: Does he say the most about our modern condition or is he entirely irrelevant to the 21st century?
