MUSiC/ORCHESTRA Trips

MUSIC in the AIR                                  Thursday, October 16 & November 13

Symphony Hall, Boston

The Boston Symphony Orchestra’s 128th season embraces a wealth of beloved masterworks, as well as ground-breaking pieces that chart the dynamic evolution of classical music to the present day. With a blockbuster season of both familiar and visionary pieces, as well as outstanding performers and conductors, selecting programs has been most challenging. Accordingly, we are offering music lovers two opportunities to attend one of these exciting musical events this semester. Here is an invitation to experience a concert in the making and get an inside glimpse of the BSO at work in the final rehearsal before a performance.  Rehearsals include an informative, pre-rehearsal talk and notes on the program.

The October 16 concert will feature James Levine conducting the BSO, and pianist Maurizio Pollini in a program that includes Tchaikovsky Symphony No. 6, Schumann Piano Concerto and the world premiere of Kirchner’s The Forbidden, commissioned by the BSO for its 125th anniversary.

Second in this fall offering is a Thursday, November 13 rehearsal, featuring conductor Marek Janowski and Alban collaborating in Dvorak Cello Concerto and Beethoven Symphony No. 6, Pastoral.

Following each rehearsal, the group will be transported to the Prudential Center, where a number of shops and restaurants offer a wide variety of choices (a list of restaurants will be provided before each trip). Barrington departure will be at 7:15, followed by a Providence pickup at 7:35; return approximately 4:30 PM.

FEE: $48 per rehearsal. Includes BSO rehearsal ticket, BCS escort, motorcoach transportation, and driver tip.

New this fall is a special offering, INTRODUCTION TO SYMPHONIC LISTENING, a 7-week course which includes five classroom sessions and the above rehearsals as field trips.   (See courses for full course description). The fee for the 7-week course is $145 Barrington residents/ $150 non-residents, which includes all features of the trips described above plus the 5 classroom sessions, beginning September 25.

LES CONTES D’HOFFMAN (THE TALES of HOFFMANN)

                                                                                                       Sunday, November 16

...conducted by Keith Lockhart

This fall our opera excursion takes us to Boston, where a matinee performance of The Tales of Hoffmann will be performed by Boston Lyric Opera at the Shubert Theatre.  It’s Boston Lyric Opera’s 32nd year of fully staged and fabulous opera in Boston. For those unfamiliar with this opera, the story is basically this: Serial loser-in-love drinks to forget.  Instead, he remembers: a dancing doll, a singing consumptive, and a Venetian courtesan have all left him—two by dying.  His current love walks away because he has drunk himself into a useless stupor.  Only his friendly Muse stays faithful.  As the opera opens, Hoffmann, in a haze of pipe tobacco and beer,  regales his drinking buddies with tales of romantic woe. He’s easily bewitched, Hoffmann is. He falls for an automaton, among other bad choices. Maybe it’s the mad inventors or the voice from the dead that make him so crazy. Offenbach’s music, on the other hand? Crazy beautiful, a tour-de-force.As an added treat, Boston Pops conductor, Keith Lockhart, returns to BLO this fall to conduct this opera. Based on the stories of E.T.A. Hoffmann, this production will be sung in French with a projected English translation. Late morning departure will bring us to Boston in time for an optional lunch at Maggiano’s in the theater district before the 3:00PM matinee performance. This will be an Italian menu, served family style, with many delicious choices in all four courses. Barrington departure at 11:15 will be followed by a Providence pickup at 11:35; return will be approximately 7:00PM.

FEE: $120. Includes opera ticket, BCS escort, motorcoach transportation and driver tip. A $70 deposit will reserve your ticket until October 15, when the balance will be due. The cost of the family-style lunch is $32, and made be paid with the balance. However, those opting for this lunch should so note on their registration form.
